How Jeff Bell Overcame Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

April 29, 2025

Jeff Bell, a nationally recognized radio news anchor and author, is a real example of someone who has successfully managed life with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). His story has inspired thousands of people worldwide who are struggling with anxiety and obsessive thinking patterns.

Jeff Bell developed severe OCD symptoms in his early adulthood. His condition was characterized by debilitating obsessions and compulsions, including fears of causing harm and an overwhelming need for certainty. At his worst, everyday decisions such as choosing which route to drive to work or picking an item at the grocery store could trigger hours of anxiety, doubt, and compulsive checking behaviors. His OCD severely affected both his professional career and personal life, leading to intense emotional exhaustion and feelings of isolation.

For many years, Bell suffered in silence. Like many others with OCD, he feared that sharing his struggles would lead to stigma or misunderstanding. Eventually, as the condition worsened, he realized that hiding it was no longer sustainable. He sought professional help and was officially diagnosed with OCD.

With the guidance of a cognitive-behavioral therapist who specialized in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy, Bell began his journey toward recovery. ERP therapy is considered the gold standard treatment for OCD. It involves gradually facing obsessive fears without performing compulsions, allowing the brain to learn that anxiety will diminish over time without needing ritualistic behaviors. Through consistent practice and support, Bell slowly gained control over his OCD symptoms.

Medication also played a supportive role in his treatment. Combined with therapy, medication helped reduce the intensity of obsessive thoughts and made it easier for him to engage in ERP exercises. Over time, Bell rebuilt his confidence, regained control of his life, and returned to his career with a renewed sense of purpose.

Rather than hiding his experience, Bell chose to share it publicly to raise awareness and help others. He authored two influential books, "Rewind, Replay, Repeat" and "When in Doubt, Make Belief," where he candidly discusses his struggles and recovery journey. He also became a national spokesperson for the International OCD Foundation, advocating for better understanding and treatment of the disorder.

Today, Jeff Bell continues to live a successful and fulfilling life. His story reminds us that while OCD is a chronic condition, it can be managed effectively with evidence-based treatment, persistence, and courage. His recovery journey offers hope that living well with OCD is absolutely possible.
