Depressive Disorders

A group of conditions characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest.

Depressive disorders are mental health conditions marked by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in daily activities. They impact emotional and physical well-being and can affect anyone, regardless of age or background.

Symptoms

  • Depressed or irritable mood most of the day
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Loss of interest in hobbies or social activities
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping
  • Thoughts of death or suicide (in severe cases)

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on a clinical interview using criteria from the DSM-5. Doctors may use tools like the PHQ-9 questionnaire and rule out physical health issues that mimic depression.

Treatment Options

Treatment includes psychotherapy (e.g. CBT, interpersonal therapy), antidepressant medications like SSRIs or SNRIs, lifestyle changes, support groups, and in some cases, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
