Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Recurring unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions).

OCD is a chronic mental health disorder where a person experiences uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that they feel compelled to repeat.

Symptoms

  • Obsessive fears (e.g. of contamination or harm)
  • Compulsive cleaning, checking, or counting
  • Difficulty controlling obsessive thoughts
  • Temporary relief after performing rituals
  • Distress if routines are interrupted

Diagnosis

A clinician evaluates obsessions and compulsions against DSM-5 criteria. Tools like the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) may also be used.

Treatment Options

Primary treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy (specifically Exposure and Response Prevention) and SSRIs. Severe cases may benefit from deep brain stimulation or intensive outpatient programs.
